The Athletic’s James Boyd writes that “the writing has been on the wall” for the Colts to release RT Braden Smith.
Smith missed several games last season with an undisclosed personal matter. Releasing the soon-to-be 29-year-old would save the Colts $16.75 million against the salary cap. Matt Goncalves played 566 snaps last year and may be inheriting the right tackle role in Indianapolis. Smith would make an interesting veteran addition to a tackle-needy team if his personal matters are resolved.
  • Colts traded up with the Cardinals to select Pittsburgh OT Matt Goncalves with the No. 79 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Considered a four-star OT from the 2019 recruiting class, Goncalves (6'6/327) had a very bright outlook as a 2024 Draft prospect this time last year. However, a left foot injury caused him to miss the final nine games of the 2023 season which has taken some steam out of his ascension. A functional athlete with a 7.69 RAS, the former Freshman All-American is largely a stationary blocker, as he gains minimal ground on vertical sets and is often forced to reach to meet faster Edges. Against power rushers, he can lose his leverage when his pad level gets a bit high. Goncalves’ strength comes in precision, not power, as his 19 bench reps indicate (27th%). Goncalves joins an Indy offensive line graded by PFF as last year’s seventh best run blocking unit and seventh best pass blocking unit.
