49ers-Giants will not be a “cute football game”

Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty nicely summed up Wednesday why so many of us are looking forward to the NFC title game.

He also gave a pull quote that both tabloids in New York couldn’t resist using. Hate when that happens.

“This is not going to be a cute football game. It’s not going to be for the meek and mild,” Canty said. “This is going to be a bloodbath, that’s what it’s going to be.

“They do not try to make it a secret, they try to beat you up. We pride ourselves on being a physical football team. Something’s gotta give on Sunday. Something’s gotta give.”

This will be a hard-hitting game. The offensive line that holds up the best will probably win, because both offensive lines will be overmatched.

Then again, these teams aren’t exactly “ground and pound” groups all the time. The 49ers actually had an uncharacteristic pass-first approach against the Giants in their first meeting. It was effective; Alex Smith played very well. San Francisco threw a lot last week as well.

The Giants would like to run the ball, but they haven’t been effective most of the year at doing so. It’s almost impossible to run on the 49ers.

Even though we expect physical play Sunday, this game will probably come down to quarterbacks and pass rushers. Like most games.
