Uncertainty about whether Anthony Davis would decide to resume his NFL career led the 49ers to make different decisions in the draft than they may have made if they knew he’d be back, but the end result appears to be more options when it comes to deploying their offensive line.
Davis has played right tackle throughout his career, but made the move to right guard during Thursday’s practice with the Broncos. It was the first time Davis has played with the first team since returning to the Niners and the move came after he spoke to offensive line coach Pat Flaherty about kicking inside to play next to Trent Brown.
“We want the best five on the field and Trent is not going to play guard,” Davis said, via the Sacramento Bee. “He’s a giant man. And I feel like I could adapt to guard.”
Andrew Tiller and first-round pick Joshua Garnett have been seeing time at the position, although coach Chip Kelly called the makeup of the line a work in progress after the preseason opener so Davis’ cameo at guard could lead to a longer exploration of a position change.
