The San Francisco 49ers’ acquisition of free agent defensive end Demetric Evans last week is expected to trigger a position shift for big defensive lineman Isaac Sopoaga back to nose guard, according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. As noted in Josh Alper’s Sunday morning one-liners, Sopoaga is expected to compete with incumbent starter Aubrayo Franklin inside. Franklin is heading into the final year of his contract. According to NFL.com, Sopoaga recorded 41 tackles and one sack last season for the 49ers in 15 starts. In five NFL seasons, the 6-foot-2, 330-pound former Hawaii star has registered 104 career tackles and four sacks. Meanwhile, Evans is slated to compete at left defensive end with Kentwan Balmer. Balmer is a former first-round draft pick from North Carolina who had seven tackles as a rookie in 16 games with no starts last season.
