Blake Sims started all 14 games at quarterback for Alabama last season and directed the team to college football’s inaugural final four, but his performance at the position didn’t convince NFL scouts that he could handle the job in the pros.
Sims went undrafted and he didn’t get a contract after working out for the Packers at their rookie minicamp over the weekend. Coach Mike McCarthy said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, that Sims “made some throws” and “did some nice things” during his two days of practice in Green Bay, but the team also worked him out in non-quarterback drills.
Sims will move on to try out for the Redskins and his agent Kyle Strongin says that the team will be looking at Sims as a running back. Sims saw time at the position early in his career at Alabama before switching to quarterback and ultimately ascending to the starting job.
It may be a long shot for Sims to make it into the league as a running back, but long shots are better than no shot at all and that’s what it looks like he has if he insists on playing quarterback.
