Word on Monday was that the Broncos would use the exclusive version of the franchise tag on linebacker Von Miller and it became official ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to use the tag.
According to multiple reports, the Broncos have filed the necessary paperwork with the league to use the exclusive tag on Miller. Had they used the non-exclusive tag, Miller would have been free to negotiate with other teams who would have to fork over two first-round picks if Miller agreed to a deal that Denver didn’t want to match.
Under the terms of the exclusive tag, Miller would make the average of the five best-paid linebackers for the 2016 season so the value won’t be known for a couple of months. That would become a moot point if Miller and the Broncos sign a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline to get one done.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Tuesday that the two sides are “not close” on such an agreement, but that they have shown a “commitment” to getting one done.
