We know there has been a lot of anger in our comments section during the lockout. Pro-owner folks are angry with DeMaurice Smith. Pro-player folks are mad at Roger Goodell. (It’s odd very few folks seem to be pro-neither.)
Honestly, though, it’s not necessarily any uglier than the usual Vikings-Packers or Ravens-Steelers fan anger. And we suspect the lockout would quickly be forgotten if it suddenly ended.
For now, the lockout has been a major annoyance to football fans, but perhaps the NFL and its players were right. Perhaps they can take their fans for granted, and assume the masses will come back and spend all their money no matter the abuse they dish out.
Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports joined PFT Live for a great segment on Friday, and wondered why there hasn’t been more widespread action from fans during the lockout.
“Why aren’t fans absolutely revolting now?. . . If you’re a fan, how can you not be mad? And how can you tell me your anger is equal or more toward the players if you’re really thinking it through?” Silver said. “You’ve gotta be mad at the owners, and you absolutely should be voicing it in a way that puts pressure on them to get these people back in the workplace.”
We think there is plenty of anger to go around towards both sides, no matter how much you think it through. But Silver’s point is well taken, and the reality is that owners and players don’t really feel any pressure from fans to do something.
Or they would be doing something about it.
