Art Schlichter, accused of stealing more than $1 million to feed his gambling addiction, remains in jail after a judge set his bond, appropriately enough, at $1 million.

Schilchter, the No. 4 pick in the 1982 NFL draft, has been in and out of prison and spent more than 10 years of his life behind bars, all for crimes related to the compulsive gambling that derailed his NFL career.

Attorney Sam Shamansky said Schlichter wanted to be released from jail so he could get treatment for gambling addiction. If Schlichter posts bond, he must remain on house arrest at his mother’s home.

Although Schlichter was never any good as an NFL quarterback, he’s always been plenty good at swindling people out of their money. The current charges he’s facing revolve around an old woman whom Schlichter persuaded to give him $1 million for a phony business opportunity. Schlichter apparently lost all that money gambling, just as he’s lost all his money -- and lots of other people’s money -- for all of his adult life.
