The potent tackle of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler by Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has generated mixed reviews regarding whether and to what extent it was clean.
Bears receiver Brandon Marshall already has made his views known.
After Monday night’s 13-7 win over Detroit, Marshall sent a couple of tweets to Suh. “A Suh. What u did to Jay wasn’t cool. Great players don’t have to do that,” Marshall said initially, via CSNChicago.com. And then this: “A Suh. Something I’ve learned and now passing down to you. Succeed with character.”
It’s unknown whether Marshall’s comments reflect his own views or the mood of the locker room.
The only portion of the hit that seemed to cross the line came as Suh drove Cutler to the ground with a forearm against Cutler’s neck, driving his helmet into the ground. Though Cutler didn’t suffer a concussion, forcible hits to the head and neck are prohibited.
Also, and as a practical matter, it looked like the kind of violent hit on a quarterback that the NFL has been trying to get away from.
The officials didn’t feel that way. We’ll find out Friday whether the league office agrees.
