The Buccaneers haven’t seen anything of J.R. Sweezy on the field since signing him in March. And now, he’s seeing a doctor.
According to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said Sweezy was away from camp getting checked out by a specialist.
“He’s been seeing a doctor in California the last couple of days,” Koetter said. “I’m not the doctor and I haven’t talked to the doctor, but we’ll let you know as soon we know something we can tell you.”
Sweezy has been bothered by back and calf problems, and remains on the physically unable to perform list. The Bucs signed the former Seahawks conversion project (he was a defensive tackle in college) to a five-year, $32.5 million contract in free agency.
The Bucs were also without a pair of offensive standouts who have practiced at some point this year, with running back Charles Sims (ankle) and wide receiver Vincent Jackson (undisclosed) out of action, which could mean they miss Thursday’s preseason opener.
