A league source tells us that Saints running back Reggie Bush underwent arthroscopic on Monday to repair a torn medial meniscus in his knee. Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham performed the surgery. The normal recovery time is two-to-four weeks. However, we’re told there’s a chance that Bush will be out of action longer than that, in order to ensure that the knee is fully healed (or, more correctly, as healed as it’s going to be) before Bush returns to action. The medial meniscus and the lateral meniscus are the two primary shock absorbers in the knee. Torn pieces of the cartilage are surgically removed, since the loose material can affect significantly the performance of the joint. The only problem is that cartilage doesn’t repair itself or regenerate. And so once enough of it is gone, the player has bone-on-bone contact in the knee.
