We’re still five days away from the start of the 2010 NFL draft, but we’ve already got a name to keep an eye on for this summer’s supplemental draft: BYU running back Harvey Unga.
Unga is reportedly leaving BYU because of an honor code violation and hoping to enter the supplemental draft, which takes place each summer and typically involves players whose college football careers ended unexpectedly after it was too late to declare for the April draft. Last year the Redskins made Jeremy Jarmon the only player taken in the supplemental draft.
Unga ran for more than 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons at BYU and was considering entering this year’s draft before announcing in January that he’d return to BYU.
“I am staying in school and looking forward to playing my final season of college football,” Unga said at the time. “I want to finish my college education, and I hope to play well and do my best as a senior to help our team.”
It’s not clear what Unga did to violate BYU’s honor code, which prohibits activities ranging from plagiarism to the use of alcohol and tobacco to growing a beard to “promoting homosexual relations as being morally acceptable.”
BYU women’s basketball player Keilani Moeaki, who is described as Unga’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, is also reportedly leaving the school over an honor code violation.
