Chargers receiving corps banged up

The Chargers claimed wide receiver Jeremy Butler off of waivers on Monday and they may need him to make an immediate contribution on offense.

Thursday saw the team open practice without wide receivers Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams, although the team listed both as limited which suggests they did something after the session was closed to the media. Tight end Hunter Henry also sat out, which further depletes the targets that quarterback Philip Rivers has had at his disposal this season.

All three players are dealing with knee injuries and it’s the second straight day that the trio has been out, which doesn’t bode well for their availability for this Sunday’s game against the Titans.

The Chargers have Antonio Gates at tight end, but they would be down to Dontrelle Inman, Griff Whalen and Butler at wideout. If there’s an upside, it’s that the injuries to Stevie Johnson, Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead have given the team plenty of experience at making do with what’s on hand offensively.
