Because of a stable offense and attrition caused by injuries, the Saints don’t have too many depth chart questions at the moment.

But one of them points to the inherent danger of reading too much into such charts which are released by the team each preseason.

The most important competition in Saints camp is for the left tackle job, and holdover Charles Brown is listed as the starter, with former No. 2 overall pick Jason Smith second and rookie Terron Armstead third.

But as Katherine Terrell of the New Orleans Times-Picayune notes, Armstead has taken most of the second-team work in practice so far.

While it’s something to go on, these charts are often filled in by team PR staffs as opposed to the coaches, which explains some of the oddities you’ll see from time to time.

Brown’s been a solid enough player, but has struggled to stay on the field in recent years. Armstead has a high ceiling, but he’s a rookie, and expecting him to cover Drew Brees’ blind side might be unfair at the moment.
