Chris Cooley played tight end for nine seasons in Washington and was a two-time Pro Bowler, but he hasn’t played since the 2012 season, when he caught just one pass. So there’s no way he could come back this year, is there?
Actually, Cooley says there’s a chance.
“If I went to camp, I could be anybody’s third tight end, worst case,” Cooley told Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “I have no doubt. Any team in the NFL, I could be their third tight end. There’s not a question in my mind.”
Although Cooley has worked on Washington’s radio broadcasts since he stopped playing, and has been working out at the team facility, he would apparently play for some other team if he were to return. Steinberg writes that Cooley’s conversations about returning have been “with an out-of-town NFL offensive coordinator.” That coordinator isn’t named, but Atlanta’s Kyle Shanahan, Miami’s Bill Lazor and Oakland’s Bill Musgrave are all offensive coordinators who were assistants in Washington while Cooley played there.
The 33-year-old Cooley admits that the idea of him playing this season “seems far-fetched to anybody else.” But if there’s a team that’s looking for a third tight end, that team should give Cooley a call.
