The NFL’s oldest player wants to keep going, and his team wants to oblige.
The Colts and kicker Adam Vinatieri are working on a contract extension, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
The 43-year-old Vinatieri has played 10 seasons in Indianapolis after playing 10 seasons in New England before that, and he has said recently that he’d like to play at least another year or two. Last year he made 25 of his 27 field goal attempts, including a long of 55 yards, so he’s certainly still capable of getting the job done.
Vinatieri is slated to become a free agent on March 9, but the deal may get done before Vinatieri hits free agency. Because Vinatieri has been franchised twice in his career, the franchise tag is not a realistic option. Any player who is franchised for a third time in his career gets the quarterback franchise tag, which this year would mean a $19.953 million salary. Obviously, no team is going to pay a kicker that kind of money. Even though the Colts highly value Vinatieri.
