The Cowboys don’t know when Jaylon Smith will take the field. But at least he’s now under contract.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN.com, the Cowboys signed their second-round pick to his four-year contract today.

The Notre Dame linebacker was widely considered a first-round talent, but concerns about the knee injury he suffered in January made him fall out of the first day.

The Cowboys are taking the optimistic approach, saying they won’t put him on IR, hoping he’ll be able to participate in a playoff run.

Of course, that presumes things well beyond Smith’s own recovery, but their own team doctor performed the surgery on Smith’s knee, so they should have solid information about the nerve damage there and his timetable for a potential return.
