On October 7, the 1985 Bears will finally get their long-overdue trip to the White House after winning the Super Bowl.
Some guys, like Panthers coach Ron Rivera, can’t make it due to their current gigs. Another guy has no conflict, but nevertheless won’t go.
Hall of Famer Dan Hampton told our friends at WSCR that he opted not to accept the invitation. Hampton said he was irked that the invitation didn’t extend to spouses and children. “Secondly, I’m not a fan of the guy in the White House, and third, it was 25 years ago,” Hampton said, via USA Today. “Let it go.”
President Obama, a Bears fan, recently extended the offer, given that the Bears didn’t get a chance to visit the White House.
“It basically just rolled off our backs, and now, 25 years later to say, ‘Let’s put the band back together,’” Hampton said. “No, I’m not in.”
That’s his prerogative. We’ve got a feeling that the main reason is that Hampton isn’t a “fan” of Obama. Which also is his prerogative. Still, if anyone from the ’85 Bears was going to take such a grumpy-old-man stance, we would have guessed that it would have been their head coach.
