New Cowboys running back Darren McFadden said he still has some good football left in him, and he wants to prove it.
At the same time, he’s realistic that he’s probably going to be joined by someone in the Cowboys backfield while doing that work.
During an appearance on NFL Network last week, McFadden said he wasn’t deterred by the possibility of another back coming to Dallas, even if it was, say, an Adrian Peterson.
“Coming into it, that wasn’t a question I asked,” McFadden said, via the Dallas Morning News. “Once DeMarco Murray was released, I felt like it was an opportunity for me step in there and try to go in and get whatever carries I could.
“Whether they decide to sign Adrian Peterson wasn’t going to make my decision change.”
Of course, that’s also far beyond McFadden’s control, so worrying about it can’t help.
But with Peterson meeting with the NFL this week, the possibility of a move — or at least the talk about it — is only going to gain steam.
McFadden said it was “very shocking” that the Cowboys would let the league’s leading rusher from last year walk, but that he wouldn’t be surprised if they added another back to go with him, in the draft if they don’t make a move for Peterson.
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all,” McFadden said. “I’m a guy who has been in the league seven or eight years now. You know, a team doesn’t just want to put their everything on a guy that is old, or something. I feel like they’re going to take a running back and it’s not going to be something that changes how I feel about the team or whatever.
“I’m a competitive guy. That’s going to bring out the best in me.”
Now he just has to wait to see who he’s going to be competing with.
