Jaguars quarterback David Garrard knows it’s just a matter of time before a younger player takes his place. And if that means Jacksonville spends its first-round draft pick on a quarterback, Garrard can live with that.

“Eventually it’s going to happen,” Garrard told the Florida Times-Union. “I don’t have a problem with it.”

If the Jaguars don’t take a quarterback in the first round, it will probably be more about their draft position than anything else: Jacksonville isn’t inclined to trade up, and the top quarterbacks (Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert) are likely to be gone at No. 16.

But the Jaguars, who have only drafted four quarterbacks in any round in franchise history (Rob Johnson, Jonathan Quinn and Byron Leftwich, in addition to Garrard), are almost certainly going to draft a quarterback at some point. Garrard doesn’t see that as a threat.

“I know I’m the starting quarterback for this team,” Garrard said, “so I’m going to continue to go out and prepare like that and work my butt off to make sure this team, this city wins a championship.”

Even if there’s a quarterback on the bench behind him, being groomed to win future championships in Jacksonville.
