Several readers raised with us earlier in the week the question of whether Saints Jason David celebrated one of the rare occasions on which he wasn’t burned like a forgotten meatloaf by doing the “crip walk,” a gang move originating in Southern California. David, by the way, is from Southern California. Various commenters defended David, explaining that the “crip walk” has been around for a long time, and that it has crossed over into the general dance culture. David took a different approach in denying that he was engaging in a full-body gang sign. Per Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, David said that it’s “something he’s done since his days as youth and is not gang-related.” But if he’s been doing it since his days as a youth and if it’s only gradually entered the fringes of the mainstream, common sense would tell us that he started doing it at a time when it was only a gang thing. And that makes his denial flimsy and predictable. David also said he hasn’t heard from the league about his routine. UPDATE: Our pal Robert Littal of BlackSportsOnline, who is roughly the same age as David, contacted us with his take on the situation: “The dance that David was doing looked more to me like a bad imitation of [MC Hammer] or Vanilla Ice than a ‘crip walk.’ A ‘crip walk’ is a lot more choreographed than you might think and if he was doing that there would have been no mistaking it.”
