The Chargers got the ball rolling on their offseason moves last week by re-signing linebacker Donald Butler and they’re continuing this week by paring some veterans from the roster.
Fullback Le’Ron McClain has been released and he’ll be joined on the street by cornerback Derek Cox. Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports that the team has informed Cox that he’ll be released as the team gets its house in order for free agency.
Cox signed a four-year, $20 million deal with the Chargers before last season, but played poorly and tumbled down the depth chart as the season progressed. His release has a lot to do with that performance because paring him from the roster will create $3.9 million in dead money. It does save the Chargers from paying Cox $4.25 million in base salary this season.
Cox’s failure to meet expectations will force the Chargers to look for help at corner again this offseason. Shareece Wright, Steve Williams, Johnny Patrick and Crezdon Butler make up the group of corners currently on the roster.
