Patriots safety Devin McCourty reportedly could have gotten more money elsewhere. He still got plenty to stay in New England.
Per a source with knowledge of the contract, McCourty received a $15 million signing bonus and $7 million in fully guaranteed base salaries over the first two years of the deal -- $2.5 million in 2015 and $4.5 million in 2016.
The 2017 base salary of $6.5 million is guaranteed for injury only at signing, but it becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2017 league year. The final two years have non-guaranteed base salaries of $7.5 million and $9 million, respectively.
McCourty also has $500,000 per year tied to per-game roster bonuses.
It works out to a total package of $47.5 million over five years, but as a practical matter it’s a two-year, $22 million deal with a team option, year to year, on the final three for $25.5 million.
Cap numbers are $6 million, $8 million, $10 million, $11 million, and $12.5 million from 2015 through 2019, respectively.
