The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that running back Brian Westbrook will undergo surgery this Friday to repair his injured ankle. Per the two-sentence release, Westbrook will have a “debridement” of his right ankle. Though Westbrook’s agent, Todd France, characterizes the procedure as an effort to remove bone spurs, the term “debridement” implies that Westbrook has arthritis in the ankle. That said, it’s a minimally-invasive procedure, and bone spurs may be removed as part of the operation. The goal is to relieve pain, but there seems to be no guarantee that the procedure will achieve that end. The surgery will be performed in Baltimore, by Dr. Mark Meyerson.
