Emanuel Cook Tries To Explain His Past

Former South Carolina safety Emanuel Cook is expected by some experts to be drafted in round three. He possibly would be regarded even more highly, but for a couple of incidents from his past. First, he got busted in 2007 on a gun charge, which later was dropped. Then, the school suspended him from the 2008 Vandelay Outback bowl because he flunked a class. (Hell, if every school did that, they’d be playing North Dakota high school-style seven-on-seven.) With the draft starting tomorrow (hadn’t you heard?), Cook is now trying to explain himself. He’d be better off saying nothing. “The media put it out there,” Cook told Zach Buchanan of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel regarding the gun charge. “They may think I’m a bad guy. Everybody that knows me knows I’m a good guy.” (Yeah, Emanuel. Of all the athletes who have been arrested, the media decided to publicize your case only. It’s our fault. Sorry.) He also characterized the situation with the Pacman-patented “wrong place at the wrong time” card. Specifically, Cook says that he was on the porch at his dorm, and a friend was showing off a new car -- and a new gun. Cook looked at the gun, handed it back, and then police showed up and arrested him. Though the charges were dropped, that account sounds roughly as plausible as “the tractor story.”
