Eric Wood: Don’t fire Rex, we’re “so freaking close”

Rex Ryan insists that he doesn't know about the Bills ownership trying to fire him but admits there is uncertainty. Why hasn't Ryan addressed this privately with the Bills owners?

Bills coach Rex Ryan denied a report that indicated he knows he’ll be fired at the end of the season, which made two weeks in a row when reports about his impending departure from Buffalo was a topic of conversation at his postgame press conference.

This denial came after 33-13 win over the Browns that kept the Bills from mathematical elimination from the playoff race and it came with some support from center Eric Wood. Wood, who is out with a broken leg, said he’d tell Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula, who also own the Sabres, that football “isn’t like hockey” in terms of being able to find a quick fix with the right draft choice.

Wood said continuity was the right plan for a team he argues isn’t far off from the success they seek in Buffalo.

“I’m a Rex guy. I like Rex a lot. I like him as a coach. I think he’s a great leader,” Wood said, via the Associated Press. “I know it doesn’t feel like it all the time, but we’re so freaking close.”

Browns left tackle Joe Thomas, who has seen plenty of coaches come and go in his career, offered the same advice to the Bills and said that teams shouldn’t hire coaches without expecting to keep them for four years “to put their plan in place.”
