The Giants have enough problems that the return of any one player to the lineup isn’t likely to change their fortunes all that much.

Having said that, it’s easier to go through life offensively when you can run the ball and the Giants have run the ball much more effectively this season when they have Rashad Jennings in the lineup. They’ve missed him for the last four games, all of which were losses, and coach Tom Coughlin said Monday that the team is expecting to have Jennings back for this week’s game against the 49ers.

“I think he will [return],” Coughlin said, via NJ.com. “I’m hoping that he will. He did have a good week of practice last week for what we asked him to do. He had a weekend to continue to rehab and strengthen, so he has worked hard at that. I am going to say that we certainly do expect that he will be ready at the end of this week, but who knows?”

Andre Williams has averaged 2.7 yards per carry as the starter over the last four games and the team lost both Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox to injuries in last Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks, so the Giants may need to call Brandon Jacobs back from retirement in the event that Jennings isn’t able to go this weekend.
