Given the Chiefs’ terrible record in 2012 and the presence of a new head coach (Andy Reid) and general manager (John Dorsey), sweeping changes to the roster -- even core players -- wouldn’t have been a complete surprise, considering the circumstances. Management changes often lead to personnel changes. It happens everywhere.
While Reid and Co. have made some changes, with the pending trade for QB Alex Smith the biggest of all, they have also signaled how much they like some of the personnel they inherited. (And a bare cupboard they did not inherit -- after all, the Chiefs did have six Pro Bowlers last season.) Of note, WR Dwayne Bowe and P Dustin Colquitt signed long-term deals before they could ever test free agency.
Now, it looks like the Chiefs are working to keep defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey in the fold. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Sunday night that “it would not be surprising” if Dorsey re-signed before free-agent signings commence on Tuesday.
As PFT’s Mike Florio noted on Thursday, the Chiefs want to bring back Dorsey, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The question was whether a deal could get done. La Canfora’s report suggests both sides are making the effort to do so.
The 28-year-old Dorsey has started 65 games in five seasons. A calf injury ended his 2012 campaign. Dorsey ranks No. 53 in PFT’s Free Agent Hot 100.
