In July, cornerback Jabari Greer said that he wasn’t yet ready to return to action after suffering a severe knee injury, including a torn ACL, in November of 2013.
Greer said at the time that he was “content” with where he was in life, which signaled that the 32-year-old was already thinking that he might not ever return to the field. On Thursday, he confirmed that’s the case.
Greer wrote on Twitter Thursday that his 10 years in the NFL were a “blast” in a post with the hashtag “retirement.” He also appeared as a guest on ESPN and sipped from a cup that said “retired” in case there was any doubt about his status.
Greer retires after a long career that began with long odds when he signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2004. He’d start one game as a rookie and progress to a more regular role in the starting lineup over his five years in Buffalo, but he’ll likely be remembered by most as a member of the Saints for the final five years in his career.
Greer started 60 games for New Orleans over that span, including the Super Bowl XLIV win that made him and his teammates the most celebrated team in the history of the franchise. It wasn’t a run that will end with a yellow blazer, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good and long one for a player who will be getting rousing ovations at any Saints game he might attend in the future.
