Jaguars cut roster to 85

NFL teams are required to trim their rosters from 90 players to 80 by Tuesday. But midway through the preseason, teams have a good enough sense of the talent on their rosters that some teams are starting to cut players now.

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived five players this morning, reducing their roster to 85. The move makes sense: If you’ve got guys in camp who are clearly not going to make the team, you might as well let them go know and turn all your focus to the roster decisions that are going to require a little more thought.

Jacksonville’s cuts were wide receiver Tiquan Underwood, safety Michael Hamlin, linebacker Slade Norris, kicker Sam Swank and punter Brent Bowden.

The Jaguars will have to make five more cuts in the next five days, and every team will have to cut all the way down to the 53-player limit by Saturday, September 3.
