There aren’t too many players available on the open market that could provide upgrades for teams before they start training camp, but tight end Jermaine Gresham could do that for someone.
Gresham was thought to be a possible Raiders signing early in the offseason, but physical exams during his free agent visit showed that Gresham needed to have back surgery. That’s left Gresham without a team for the 2015 season after the operation, something he’ll try to remedy with a visit this week.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gresham will visit the Cardinals, who saw their depth at the position take a hit when John Carlson retired in May. Arizona has Troy Niklas, Darren Fells, Ted Bolser and seventh-round pick Gerald Christian on the depth chart right now.
Gresham visited with the Saints last month and coach Sean Payton said he thought there was a fit for Gresham in New Orleans, but no deal has materialized. Schefter reports that Gresham has other visits planned in the next two weeks and that he’s expected to sign somewhere before training camps get underway for all 32 teams.
