Jets will pick up fifth-year option on Sheldon Richardson

Sheldon Richardson

Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson has given the team no reason to doubt him on the field. And even with some off-field issues, they weren’t enough to doubt his future.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets will pick up the fifth-year option on the 2013 first-round pick, which will be for around $8 million.

Richardson served a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse program last season, and is awaiting word on possible conduct penalties after a high speed racing incident in Missouri, which he received two year’s probation for in a plea deal.

Otherwise, he’s been a great pick, with 16.5 sacks in three seasons, and the ability to do multiple things. He stood up and played outside linebacker at times last year, which is partly because he can and partly because the Jets lacks options.

And now they have an option to keep Richardson for another year.
