The Jets haven’t officially announced the hiring of Todd Bowles as their new head coach yet, but that hasn’t gotten in the way of reports of how his coaching staff is taking shape.
Chan Gailey is expected to return to the NFL as the team’s offensive coordinator and multiple reports have tabbed Kacy Rodgers as Bowles’ choice as the defensive coordinator. Rodgers and Bowles worked together in Miami from 2008-2011, where Bowles was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, and also were on the same staff in Dallas from 2005-2007.
Rodgers is currently the defensive line coach for the Dolphins and may hold onto some of those duties with the Jets since Bowles’s wealth of defensive experience may lead him to be more involved on that side of the ball. If he does, he’ll have plenty to work with as Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson have proven to be worth the first-round picks the Jets spent on them.
Whoever gets the job as coordinator will be charged with boosting the play of the Jets secondary after a rough 2014 campaign that saw little help provided by oft-injured 2013 first-round pick Dee Milliner or 2014-first round safety Calvin Pryor.
