The Buccaneers got two sacks from Larry English in the preseason before releasing him before they played the Panthers in Week One.
The Bucs had one sack in that 20-14 loss and, coincidence or not, English is back with the team on Tuesday. The team announced that they have waived defensive end Stephen Means to make room for English on the roster and the defensive line.
English never panned out as a first-round pick with the Chargers, but he’ll get a shot to show that his preseason production for the team can carry over to the regular season. It probably doesn’t hurt that his salary won’t be guaranteed because he wasn’t on the team for the first week of the season. Adrian Clayborn and Michael Johnson, who tweaked his ankle in the opener, are the starters at the defensive end in Tampa.
Means, a 2013 fifth-round pick, had a tackle against the Panthers. He also played in 10 games as a rookie and has practice squad eligibility should he pass through waivers unclaimed.
