Le’Ron McClain waffles a little regarding his spittle

This week’s hot NFL-related controversy arises from the question of whether Ravens fullback Le’Ron McClain sent a mouthful of saliva into the face of Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder.

Crowder says he did it. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano claims to have evidence of it. The video seems to support the allegation.

And the situation has caught the attention of the league office. “I’ve been told there may be video of it,” Commissioner Roger Goodell told ESPN’s Michele Tafoya during Monday Night Countdown. “So if there’s video of it, we’ll look at it, we’ll try to gather all the facts, and you make the best decision you can at that point.”

McClain has denied the charge, but he has taken to Twitter, where one of the messages suggests that McClain is admitting to something.

“Video shows me arguing with guy!” McClain said Monday. “Called him something and i guess a Lil spit got on
him
. Not on purpose but I have moved on to Atlanta.”

It sure didn’t look that way to us, and if the league office applies common sense to the situation, a hefty fine will be imposed.

Then again, common sense (and the video evidence) seemed to suggest that Chiefs defensive tackle Shaun Smith had grabbed the crotch of an opponent last month. And his $10,000 fine was overturned by the appeals process that Steelers safety Troy Polamalu regards as unreliable.
