The Cowboys traveled to New Jersey for their Week 14 game against the Giants without wide receiver/kick returner Lucky Whitehead after Whitehead showed up late for team meetings on Saturday in a decision that coach Jason Garrett described as being in the best interest of the team.

Whitehead said on Tuesday that he apologized to the team for leaving them short a man in a game they’d lose 10-7 and promised that he “won’t let it happen again.”

“Coach made a decision and I took responsibility for my actions and took the punishment,” Whitehead said, via the Dallas Morning News. “It was tough but he pretty much just told me to go home. It was real disappointment. I almost bought myself a flight to come out anyway, but it was tough for me watching the game. It hurt.”

The question for Whitehead now is whether he’ll return to his former role. Garrett said the team would determine that during the week.

Dallas used Lance Dunbar on kickoff returns and Cole Beasley on punt returns. Darren McFadden also has experience as a kickoff returner and was added to the active roster this week.
