The Jets and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick haven’t reached agreement on a contract that would keep him on the team for the 2016 season, which leaves open the possibility that Fitzpatrick could depart for Denver or somewhere else as a free agent.
New Jets running back Matt Forte would prefer the scenario that sees Fitzpatrick back with the Jets. During a Monday conference call, Forte said that based on last year’s offensive production for the Jets “I would expect and hope it would be” Fitzpatrick playing quarterback and added that he hopes his presence helps convince Fitzpatrick to stick around.
“With the defense we have and how they ran the ball last year, that I felt like, with me signing and everybody else being in place it would be really enticing for him to come back as well and continue to build on what he built last year,” Forte said, via the New York Daily News.
It seems clear that what would be really enticing for Fitzpatrick would be a bigger offer from the Jets or another team bidding for his services. Should that offer fail to materialize, Fitzpatrick will have to decide about playing for less than he desires and Forte’s presence probably wouldn’t hurt the Jets in that scenario.
