Mike Lombardi headed to Indy with group from Patriots

Shortly after Mike Lombardi was fired as the Browns’ general manager last week, there were reports linking him to a job in the Patriots organization.

Those links had not led to a done deal by the end of last week and there has been no announcement from the Patriots, but it appears there’s some working relationship between Lombardi and the Patriots in place.

Several reporters traveling from Boston to Indianapolis for the combine report that Lombardi was with coach Bill Belichick, director of player personnel Nick Caserio and the rest of the Patriots contingent at Logan Airport for what sounds like a football-centric flight on Wednesday. While there’s no confirmation of Lombardi’s hiring or role, he’s expected to serve in a special assistant-type role to help evaluate personnel.

Lombardi and Belichick have had a relationship dating back to their time together with the previous iteration of the Browns in the 1990s. Much has happened for both men since then, but it appears they’ll be working together once more.
