Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been a regular at the 49ers’ offseason workouts, which puts him in line to earn a $400,000 bonus even though a series of offseason surgeries on his left shoulder, right thumb and left kneehave left him without clearance to fully participate in the team’s practices.
Kaepernick began doing some throwing in early May, but hasn’t been given the green light to do too much more than that over the last month. With OTAs done on Thursday, that leaves only the mandatory minicamp next week before the 49ers go on break until training camp.
Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins didn’t provide any reason to think Kaepernick’s participation level will change by then when he spoke to the media on Thursday.
“I think what’s important he gets cleared when he’s healthy,” Modkins said, via CSNBayArea.com. “There’s no timetable.”
The 49ers aren’t shutting down the quarterback competition before camp, so Kaepernick will still have time to make his case assuming he gets the go-ahead from doctors by the time it opens. Blaine Gabbert’s gotten a lot of time running the first team, though, and that won’t hurt his chances of being the first man up when the regular season begins.
