The New York Jets hadn’t given up any points at all in the first quarter this season. The Green Bay Packers changed that, thanks to a Jets fake punt gone bad.
Facing fourth-and-18 deep in their own territory, the Jets shocked everyone at the Meadowlands by calling for a fake punt, with punter Steve Weatherford simply tucking the ball under his arm and running.
Weatherford made a great sprint for the first down marker and was initially ruled to have a first down, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy challenged the play and won, as the replay revealed that Weatherford was pushed out of bounds just before the line to gain.
The Packers capitalized on the good field position, kicked a field goal and took a 3-0 lead.
