The Bills are on a bye, the annual portion of the calendar in which a team drifts out of sight and, in many respects, out of mind. But that doesn’t eliminate the questions about what’s going on in the mind of receiver Percy Harvin.
As explained on Sunday’s Football Night in America, Harvin’s perspective regarding his absence from the Week Seven loss to the Jaguars is that it happened due to injury only, the result of lingering problems with his hip. From Harvin’s perspective (and contrary to the team’s declaration) there were no personal reasons -- and there was no contemplation of retirement.
While it’s possible that someone from the Bills opted to interpret a statement of frustration from Harvin as an indication that he’s thinking about quitting the sport, the team’s decision to officially use the “personal reasons” excuse and to unofficially leak the possibility of retirement seems gratuitous, and potentially inflammatory.
So while there wasn’t a problem between Harvin and the Bills a week ago, there could be a problem now, especially since the Bills have done nothing since Sunday’s game to clarify the situation or to walk back the notion that Harvin is anything but injured.
