Seahawks quarterback Trevone Boykin is just an undrafted rookie fighting for a roster spot, so maybe he shouldn’t be compared to a star like Russell Wilson just yet. But coach Pete Carroll is doing it anyway.
Carroll said as the Seahawks opened rookie minicamp on Friday that he sees a lot of Wilson in Boykin, who had a very good college career at TCU but is viewed by some as lacking the abilities as a passer to succeed at the next level.
“His versatility and his style of play is so similar to Russell’s,” Carroll said, via ESPN. “He’s got a big arm. He’s a very creative athlete. He’s got great instincts and great vision. His ability to run and make people miss and get out of trouble is very similar to what Russell does. I thought that the opportunity to have both those guys in the same offense, it gives us a chance -- if it works out, and we’ve got a long way to go -- if it works out, to maintain continuity with one of the backups.”
Despite his status as an undrafted rookie, Boykin has a decent chance of making the Seahawks’ roster. Currently Wilson is the only veteran quarterback on the Seahawks (although it’s possible that Tarvaris Jackson will be re-signed), and of the three undrafted rookies in Seattle at the moment -- Boykin, Jake Heaps of Kansas and Vernon Adams of Oregon -- Boykin got the biggest signing bonus and has the best college pedigree. Carroll sure sounds like he’s ready to give Boykin every opportunity to prove he belongs in the NFL.
