The Ravens have added yet another new cornerback.
Baltimore has signed Rashaan Melvin off Miami’s practice squad, the Ravens’ website said Saturday.
To make room for Melvin, the Ravens (5-4) placed cornerback Jimmy Smith (foot surgery) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Melvin (6-2, 193) was signed to the Dolphins’ practice squad on October 28. He spent the entire 2013 season and part of the 2014 campaign with the Buccaneers, who waived him with an “injured” designation on September 15. A Northern Illinois product, the 25-year-old Melvin was on the Buccaneers’ 53-player roster for seven regular season games in the last two years, but he did not appear in any contests. The Bucs signed him as an undrafted free agent in April 2013.
The Ravens now have four cornerbacks on their roster. Only one — Lardarius Webb — was on the roster for last Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh. In addition to signing Melvin, the Ravens have promoted Tramain Jacobs from the practice squad and claimed Danny Gorrer on waivers. At the outset of the week, the Ravens released corners Dominique Franks and Chykie Brown, necessitating the need for reinforcements.
The Ravens host the Titans (2-6) on Sunday in Baltimore.
