Ray Sherman is apparently not going to serve as a token interview for the Tennessee Titans, who need to satisfy the Rooney Rule by interviewing a minority candidate before hiring their next head coach.
Despite a Monday report from ESPN saying that Sherman had agreed to interview for the Titans’ vacancy, Sherman told the Tennessean that’s not the case.
All indications are that the Titans are planning to hire from within, most likely by making offensive line coach Mike Munchak their next head coach. If the Titans have already decided on Munchak but are just looking to interview a minority, then they’re following the letter of the Rooney Rule but not the spirit.
Meanwhile, one former NFL head coach is hoping the Titans haven’t already decided to hire Munchak: Jim Mora Jr., who says he’d love to get a call from the team.
“If they were to express interest, I would certainly be interested,” Mora said.
But the Titans don’t appear to be interested in anyone other than Munchak.
