The Redskins have announced the signing of another draft pick.

Safety Phillip Thomas, selected in the fourth round with the 119th overall pick, has agreed to a four-year deal with the team. Thomas is the fifth of seven Washington draft picks to sign, leaving only second-round cornerback David Amerson and third-round tight end Jordan Reed unsigned.

Thomas was one of two safeties -- Bacarri Rambo was the other -- taken by the Redskins during the draft. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has indicated that Thomas will be viewed as a free safety. If Brandon Meriweather is healthy, he’s a good bet to win the starting strong safety job which would leave Thomas to compete with DeJon Gomes and Reed Doughty for the other spot.

That might prove to be more than the rookie is ready for in his first season, but he’ll provide depth and special teams help at the very least for a team that needs better play from their safeties than they got in 2012.
