Former NFL player and coach Dan Reeves is talking about his two-day tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. But he’s not talking about why he didn’t stick around. “It was one thing that came up that I felt was important for me but not being in the contract he felt like it was important to be there and that’s basically it,” Reeves told Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. Reeves says that money wasn’t the issue, and we’ve separately heard that, indeed, it wasn’t about the money. As we hear it, the specific authority that Reeves would possess became the sticking point. Really, what else would constitute a dealbreaker from the standpoint of his written contract? If Reeves was satisfied with the money but there was “one thing” that he viewed as important and that Jones didn’t want to give him, that “one thing” surely would have been the ability to trump Jones on all football matters. The unfortunate aspect of the situation is that the 49ers wanted Reeves to become their new offensive coordinator, and he abandoned that opportunity once Jones came calling. Now, Reeves will most likely spend another year out of the game.
