Report: Cowboys like Josh McCown, Browns “reluctant” to trade

Mike Florio considers the options that the Cowboys have in their quest for a backup quarterback following the injury of Kellen Moore.

Among the attributes that led Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones to say Nick Foles could be a good fit as backup quarterback was that Foles was a free agent who could join the team without needing to work out a trade.

Foles is no longer a free agent and it seems unlikely that the Chiefs signed him on Wednesday night just to trade him away, so the Cowboys will have to move on to other options after losing Kellen Moore to a broken ankle. Michael Vick is a free agent and he’s ready to go to Dallas, but Jones said the team would also explore trades to fill the hole behind Tony Romo.

There are multiple reports that Browns quarterback Josh McCown is at the front of the list on that front. The Browns haven’t officially named a starter yet, but all signs have pointed to Robert Griffin III getting the job with McCown serving as the backup.

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that the Browns are “reluctant” to trade him, although clearing that hurdle may just be a matter of finding the right price since they seemed to start moving toward Griffin as their choice for starter shortly after Griffin signed with the team. Coach Hue Jackson praised the way McCown has helped Griffin this week, but said, via Cleveland.com, that the mentoring role has “nothing to do with him remaining on the team.”
