The Dolphins are parting ways with one of their major free agent signings of 2013.
The club will cut linebacker Philip Wheeler, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. Per ESPN, Wheeler will be designated a post-June 1 cut.
The 30-year-old Wheeler started 4-of-15 games in which he played last season, notching 46 tackles. According to NFLPA data, Wheeler was set to make $2.9 million in salary in 2015 and $4.9 million in salary in 2016 and 2017. Given his role and compensation, his departure isn’t a major surprise.
The Wheeler signing came during Miami’s aggressive free agent push two offseasons ago under then-G.M. Jeff Ireland. However, the Dolphins have gone .500 the last two seasons and have not made the postseason since 2008.
