It doesn’t look like Will Beatty will be helping the Giants down the stretch.
The Giants placed Beatty on the physically unable to perform list at the start of camp after he tore his pectoral in offseason workouts and kept their projected starter at left tackle there when the calendar rolled into the regular season. Beatty started practicing with the team three weeks ago, which means that Thursday marks the deadline to add him to the active roster or shut him down for the rest of the year.
Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reports that the team will avail themselves of the latter option. Per Raanan, the Giants will not activate Beatty.
That will leave first-round pick Ereck Flowers at left tackle and Marshall Newhouse at right tackle for the duration of the year. Beatty signed a five-year extension with the team in 2013 and the Giants would save a bit more than $4 million under the cap if they opted to part ways with him. He is set to make $5.5 million next year.
UPDATE 11:01 a.m. ET: At his Thursday media session, Giants coach Tom Coughlin confirmed Beatty won’t play this year and announced that he’ll have rotator cuff surgery.
