Report: No changes to Favre’s contract

So with Vikings quarterback Brett Favre returning for a second season, will he be getting an increase over his $13 million base salary?

According to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, Favre’s compensation will remain the same.

Though we don’t doubt the accuracy of the information La Canfora has relayed from his source(s), we also can’t believe anything that anyone connected to this process says, on or off the record. Favre has proven, time and again, that his word can’t be trusted. And the Vikings also have demonstrated that, when it comes to Favre, they have a problem with the truth, too.

Given that any increase to Favre’s salary would create the impression that he squeezed the Vikings for more money, we’d expect both the player and the team to deny, publicly and privately, that Favre is getting a raise to honor his contract.

And given that there’s currently no salary cap, we also aren’t willing to rule out the possibility of Favre receiving some extra compensation that won’t necessarily show up on the books.

UPDATE: Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Favre will receive a $3.5 million increase in salary and that he’ll be eligible to earn another $3.5 million in incentives.
